Prayer
of Agreement
Joshua
23:10-
One man of you shall chase a thousand, for the Lord your God is He who
fights for you, as He has promised you.
Deuteronomy 32:30- How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand
to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had surrendered
them.
Ecclesiastes 4:12- Though one may be overpowered, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Mark 6:7- And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them
out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.
Matthew 18:19, 20- Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth
concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father
in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there
in the midst of them.
The significance of the number two in scripture can be either good or
bad. It can represent either division or agreement. E. W. Bullinger, the
author of Number In Scripture, said it may be for oppression or hindrance,
or it may be for association and mutual help. This is why it is so important
to choose our friends wisely. We should surround ourselves with people
of like faith. In the area of prayer, a friend who will agree with us
concerning God Word, is very valuable. We have the precious promise that
if we agree in prayer with another, asking anything in Jesus name, that
our Father will give it to us. Jesus did not put any limitations on this
promise and neither should we.
The word for "agree" in the original Greek denotes a compact
which is a contract or agreement and it suggests that this agreement is
spoken. In the case of prayer the contract is the New Covenant, and the
prayer of agreement is a spoken request based on the New Covenant. It
is a powerful form of united prayer. This prayer is in the form of a request
because Jesus said if two agree concerning anything that they ask, it
shall
be done for them. The only other stipulation that
Jesus puts on this particular prayer is that the two people agreeing must
be on earth. That qualifies all of us. Of course, all prayer must be based
on God's Word. God's Word and His will are one and the same, so when we
base our prayer on the Word, we know that we are praying according to
God's will. Jesus is the great intercessor and He has promised to be present
when two or more gather in His Name, and will set Himself in agreement
with their prayer and present it before the Father, as the High Priest
of the New Covenant.
Hebrews 7: 24, 25- But this man (Jesus) because He continues forever,
has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is able to save to the uttermost
those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession
for them.
Hebrews 6:1- Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We
have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne
of the Majesty in the heavens.
Hebrews 8: 6- But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch
as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which is established on better
promises.
When I study prayer, I am reminded of the old hymn "What A Friend
We Have In Jesus".
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
Prayer is such a wonderful privilege. It is a shame when we neglect to
pray.
James 4:2- You do not have because you do not ask.
Matthew 7:7- Ask and it will be given you.
Matthew 21:22- And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will
receive.
